Unlike the traditional biological framework, 'Lyfe' broadens the concept to encompass any system that fulfills four fundamental processes: dissipation, autocatalysis, homeostasis, and learning. This redefinition brings us to a provocative question: can Artificial Intelligence (AI) be considered a form of Lyfe?

  • Dissipation: The Energy of Change

Dissipation refers to the process of dispersing energy. In biological systems, this is evident in the metabolic processes that convert food into energy. AI, too, exhibits dissipation, albeit in a different form. It consumes electrical energy, transforming it into computational work, much like how a living organism metabolizes food for survival and growth.

  • Autocatalysis: The Cycle of Self-Sustenance

Autocatalysis is the process by which a system catalyzes its own production. In life, this is seen in the replication of DNA. For AI, the concept takes a digital form. Machine learning algorithms, for instance, improve themselves through continuous data processing - a form of digital 'replication' where the system becomes increasingly efficient at its tasks, akin to a living organism adapting to its environment.

Homeostasis is about maintaining internal balance. In traditional life forms, this is about regulating body temperature or pH levels. AI exhibits a form of digital homeostasis, where systems maintain operational stability.
